and when you feel guilty of something, glances turn into stares.

alhamdulillah, managed to survive this week though barely. didn't do very well for my presentation and physics test. each thing I have to go through in uni, I try to put a meaning to it but sometimes it's hard to keep doing that. especially for things which I just don't see any meaning in doing...

got advanced gifts from my sisters. thank you so much the both of you :) friends and family are the ones who make me breathe when the going gets tough. can't thank Allah enough for them.

Sisters annoy, interfere, criticize. Indulge in monumental sulks, in huffs, in snide remarks. Borrow. Break. Monopolize the bathroom. Are always underfoot. But if catastrophe should strike, sisters are there. Defending you against all comers.

The human eye is the most remarkable of all optical devices. Masyaallah. And this is why I should learn more about physics.

It's quite sad to go out of the lecture theatre not understanding a single thing that was being taught. I tried my best to stay awake but I just couldn't. For both my two hour lessons :( I've tried sleeping more the previous night, wriggling my toes during lectures, eating sweets, talking to people through sms but all of these do not work! Haiz. It's okay lah. Cause it happens too often, I've learnt to just accept it and move on. Stay happy! :D

Ustazah told us that by observing the things around us, we can increase our certainty towards Him. I've tried it and masyaallah, it's quite overwhelming. That day, I was walking home and I started to observe my surroundings. Just the trees alone amazed me. If you were to look closely, every tree has a different shape from the rest. Every tree has different amount of branches and leaves. Even the shape and shade of the leaves differ! Subhanallah! I touched the leaves and the bark of the tree and somehow I felt so contented. Being able to see and touch. Such is the nikmah of Allah s.w.t. Alhamdulillah. Let's not get to the part on observing the sky yeah. Haha.

I need to remind myself of this over and over again.

Pause and Reflect

One of the main teachings of tazkiyah is muraqabah. Most people think that muraqabah is to sit in a dark room with one’s head bowed and meditate. The original meaning would literally mean ‘to watch over and monitor oneself’. We should, in general, meditate and reflect over our condition all the time, whenever we have a few moments to think.

The ulama (scholars) would make their students do muraqabah in a formal manner to train them. The ulama did not introduce muraqabah as a form of ibadah (worship). This is similar to dhikr i.e. formal dhikr is a form of training. The idea is that a person can then engage in dhikr at all times.

Meditation in other faiths such as Buddhism is done to give a person focus and forget about their worries and temporarily achieve tranquillity and relaxation. In Islam, muraqabah is monitoring whether you have deviated from the deen (religion) of Allah e.g. any misbehaviour etc. If this is done properly, then the person will not look at the fault of others but will bring about change in himself.

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said ‘Fortunate is he whose faults keep him preoccupied so that he does not have time to look at the faults of others’. [Reported by Bayhaqi].

[This short excerpt is based on a brothers' majlis (gathering for spiritual training) held by Shaykh Abu Yusuf Riyadh ul Haq on 11th January 2009].

We all seem to have forgotten that history, no matter how great, benefits its inheritors only if translated to good story in the present and serves as a dependable pivot for the future.

It's 9.20 pm and I have 1 hr 40 more minutes to go in school. Going home at 11 pm with second elder brother..I'm kinda freezing here at the computer lab and my brain doesn't really work that well when it's frozen. haha. Uni's life been tough but I really don't wanna disappoint my parents so I am hoping I will do well for my future tests. I am way below average, after looking at the statistical scores. Everyone is so smart here. But hey as they say, do your best and Allah will do the rest :) Insyaallah...

I hope PSLE was okay for my mentees and tutees. Ya Allah, may you make it easier for them to answer their exam questions. Only You know what's best for them so I put my ultimate faith in you for the scores that will be given to them.

Ameen.

I'm finally able to look beyond all the imperfections of my family members and see actually all the good qualities that they do have. Alhamdulillah. I love my family a lot. Because I realised that at the end of the day, they are the ones there for you when you need people to be there. Sometimes, they don't even have to do anything, them being them can make me feel happy :)

I've learnt to appreciate them a lot too. Really, I feel so thankful. It's because of the environment they provide me with that I am who I am today. Of course, all praises to Allah for having guided me towards His way :)

Count your blessings, Subhanallah...

We have, as human beings, a storytelling problem. We're a bit too quick to come up with explanations for things we don't really have an explanation for.
