I think 'try' is a verb that is commonly misused, even for myself. Sometimes I catch myself using it in contexts that do not have any meaning. For example, if I say, 'I will try to do this question'. What does that really mean? If I go ahead and do the question, I am doing it. Doesn't matter whether I get the answer right. If I stop myself from doing the question, then I am not doing it. Isn't that right? So where does the word 'try' come in, for this case? Or if my sister tells me to buy something from the market and I say, 'I will try and see if they sell it.' In the same perception, it's wrong too right? Another example is 'I will try and stop smoking'.

Of course, the word 'try' does exist in other contexts like 'I will try to achieve my new year's resolutions.' That kinda makes sense to me.

Oh and yesterday, I wanted to use this sentence, 'I nearly freaked out'. Then I realised that the word 'nearly' in this case doesnt make sense. Like how can you feel freaked out but then stop yourself from doing so?

Haha, okay these are just random thoughts i'm posting here :)

In the future, I will make sure I speak Malay to my kids. It saddens me when I talk to kids from Malay families in Malay and they aren't able to understand what I am saying. I'm not saying that my Malay is good but I do love the Malay language. The reason why I feel that it is very important to know Malay is that it opens doors for our future generation to learn the Malay culture. By communicating with our Malay society, especially the older generation, that's when they will gain insights on our history and our heritage. Personally, I have this hypothesis in my head that the reason why some of us are so carried away with the Western culture is that we are not rooted to our own. And I definitely do not want my kids in the future to be influenced by the negative sides of the Western culture. The strong link between language and culture could possibly be why America and British are both holding on to their languages and not combine them together. (just another random though, fyi)

It's the same with Arabic. Just that Arabic is way more powerful because the door to knowledge is with Arabic. The All-Knowing talks to us in Arabic. The most wise man in the history of mankind talked in Arabic. Our scholars wrote books in Arabic. Im still nowhere in my knowledge of Arabic but I truly find it fascinating. I hope I can master it someday, insyaAllah :)

I'm a strong-headed person or in my sister's words, a stubborn person. I can be pretty aggressive when it comes to expressing my opinions about things which I strongly feel for or against. I think I have to start learning to listen to others and not be confined within my narrow-minded thoughts :)

So yesterday, our engineering professor made us partake in the marshmallow challenge. Each group was given 20 spaghetti sticks, one yard of tape, one yard of twine and one marshmallow. The aim was to build the highest structure with the marshmallow on top. The group with the highest structure would get an additional $50 for their group project this semester. It was pretty fun!!! Here's my group's structure:

I found out that I have no feminine touch/gentle hands whatsoever. Like seriously! I broke 5 spaghetti sticks altogether! Which nearly broke my team's chances of ever creating a structure. Haiz. After the 5th stick I got a phobia of the spaghetti and didnt touch them at all after that.

One of the few interesting engineering lectures ever! :)

It's just amazing.. A few days ago, everything felt like it was never gonna get better. Alhamdulillah, Allah has His unexpected ways of helping His servants. Patience. I truly need to learn to develop that virtue. May Allah guide me always, Ameen :)

My younger sister got her o level results today. And it suddenly hit me that my younger sister is growing up! :') She's my only younger sibling so I've always seen her as this kid which I have to continuously teach, give advice to and have fights with(hehe). This reminds me that I'm not getting any younger myself :P Alhamdulillah, her results were good and her grade for the subject which I tutored her in was also good so Alhamdulillah! :) May Allah continue to guide her both in this world and the hereafter.. Ameen..

I'm the worst student when it comes to the first day of school. Gotta start my engine quick and get back to studying mode! Good thing that I bumped into this auntie outside my usp class.. I talked to her for a while. She's a single mother and she was saying that it's not easy getting money to send her children to school. She told me to study hard for my parents. Somehow it gave me motivation. Gotta change my mindset also and keep telling myself not to let the fear of my grades overcome my determination to study. YES!

STAR - Sisters towards Allah and Rasul :)

The whole experience at Pertapis Girls' Home was just amazing. The feeling is just undescribable... It's like being touched a thousand times over by girls whom have gone through so much masyaAllah.. They've gone through what I, a sheltered and pampered girl, would never have thought could happen to girls at such a young age. Yet, they smile and cheer, hiding their past. These girls have taught me the true meaning of strength. I pray that they will always be under the guidance and protection of Allah..Ameen!

Thank you to the STAR committee for being so wonderful. And of course extra credit to ms PD, Sumaiyah Mohamed :D I love you all, my sisters in Islam...

عن أبي عبد الرحمن عبد الله بن مسعـود رضي الله عنه ، قال : حدثنا رسول الله صلي الله عليه وسلم – وهو الصادق المصدوق - :( إن أحـدكم يجمع خلقه في بطن أمه أربعين يوما نطفه ، ثم يكون علقة مثل ذلك ، ثم يكون مـضغـة مثل ذلك ، ثم يرسل إليه الملك ، فينفخ فيه الروح ، ويـؤمر بأربع كلمات : بكتب رزقه ، واجله ، وعمله ، وشقي أم سعيد ؛ فوالله الـذي لا إلــه غـيره إن أحــدكم ليعـمل بعمل أهل الجنه حتى ما يكون بينه وبينها إلا ذراع فيسبق عليه الكتاب فيعـمل بعـمل أهــل النار فـيـدخـلها . وإن أحدكم ليعمل بعمل أهل النار حتي ما يكون بينه وبينها إلا ذراع فــيسـبـق عليه الكتاب فيعمل بعمل أهل الجنة فيدخلها ) رواه البخاري [ رقم : 3208 ] ومسلم [ رقم : 2643 ]

On the authority of Aboo `Abd ir-Rahmaan `Abdullaah ibn Mas`ood (radiAllaahu anhu), who said: The Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) and he is the Truthful, the Believed, narrated to us:

Verily the creation of each one of you is brought together in his mother's womb for forty days in the form of a nutfah (a drop), then he becomes an 'alaqah (clot of blood) for a like period, then a mudghah (morsel of flesh) for a like period, then there is sent to him the angel who blows his soul into him and who is commanded with four matters: to write down his rizq (sustenance), his life span, his actions, and whether he will be happy or unhappy (i.e. whether or not he will enter Paradise).

By the One, other than Whom there is no deity, verily one of you performs the actions of the people of Paradise until there is but an arms length between him and it, and that which has been written overtakes him, and so he acts with the actions of the people of the Hellfire and thus enters it; and verily one of you performs the actions of the people of the Hellfire, until there is but an arms length between him and it, and that which has been written overtakes him and so he acts with the actions of the people of Paradise and thus he enters it. [Narrated by al-Bukhaari and Muslim.]

Kak Farhana Bibi was explaining this hadith to me yesterday in detail (she related it to abortion and the state of our death) and I'm so amazed by it. MasyaAllah..It reminded me of the doa of Rasulullah s.a.w which Ustazah Mariam taught us yesterday:

ALLAHUMMA INNI AS'ALUKAL HUDA WATTUQA WAL AFAFA WAL GHINA

O ALLAH! Indeed I, I ask of You, guidance, piety and chastity and to be free of depending upon anyone (except You) [Muslim]

Ustazah Mariam said that we never know how our end might be so we have to constantly pray for guidance from him. And kak farhana bibi told me that according to this hadith, we can be doing a lifetime of good deeds but then when nearing our death, we do a bad deed and we will be one of the dwellers of Hell-fire. Nauzubillah min zalik..

I visited Suwfiya with the rest of my good friends (ex-colleagues) and we had a good chat :) One thing that struck me which I thought of on my journey home was the statement Suwfiya made. She told me that my whole life, I had led a sheltered life.

The reason why it struck me was because I was feeling rather unhappy with my results earlier on and I felt that things were going tough for me. As I reflected on how my life had been, I then realised that I was actually a pampered kid ever since I was born. It suddenly made me feel so grateful for everything Allah has given me. And for all the blessings that He has given me, I have no reason to be unhappy.

First of all, I have an awesome family. I love them and they love me too. Being the second last child, I was well taken care of. I have a wonderful maid at home (she's really efficient) so I never had to do housework. There was always more food on the table than I needed. My brothers take care of me like a princess. My elder sister was always there to help me with my school work. I never had to work hard to get money. I had good friends in every school I went to. All I had to do was to study hard and everything fell into place. I got into schools that I wanted to. My extended family(PKKHB) is like another wonderful family to me. And the list goes on...

It was only recently after I entered university that I saw and felt what it was like to experience hardship. Going to places like Cambodia and Vietnam, helping out with voluntary work, striving so hard with schoolwork yet not getting the grades I wanted, experiencing my first heartbreak, having conflicts here and there and the onset of having to do housework once my maid leaves us for good...

But Alhamdulillah.. before I was brought to face all of these, Allah guided me through a spiritual journey which I am truly thankful for. There's like no words to describe it. The phase that I'm going through right now, I suddenly feel as though I'm starting to learn the meaning of life. The meaning of ups and downs. The meaning of responsibility. The meaning of faith and tawakkal... etc...

As I'm typing this and reflecting, I find it truly amazing how my life has been planned by my Creator. Truly, Allah is the best of all planners.. MasyaAllah! :) May Allah give us the strength to go through the tests which He will put us through, ameen...

And at that moment, I suddenly understood how the sahabahs of our Prophet s.a.w managed to develop such deep love and respect for Rasulullah.. Just when the ulamas were standing on stage for the closing session, I realised that I had come to love and respect them just by listening to their sincere talks over these past two days.. What more the sahabahs who spent days, months or even years with Rasulullah.. With his face full of light and his heart full of sincerity and love for his ummah. I could see that in the ulamas. They came from all over the world without being paid anything, everything just for the sake of Allah.. May Allah grant us the opportunity to meet these ulamas again and many more ulamas who will impart their knowledge to us.. Ameen :)

MasyaAllah... Alhamdulillah...

Today's 'Sacred Path of Love' conference was absolutely amazing. Being there in the auditorium, listening to the scholars giving their talks one by one. The feeling is just awesome. The passion in which Shaykh Ahmed Tijani Ben Omar talks about the love of Allah and Rasulullah is like an arrow that just shoots my heart. It makes me reflect on my own love for Allah and His Messenger s.a.w. His voice was booming across the whole auditorium. Shaykh Ahmed Tijani's qasidah and quran recitation just draws you in and it is so melodious, so heart-wrenching.. masyaAllah, I've never heard a recitation like that. He is known to be one of the best Quranic singers in the whole world. The knowledge that the scholars shared with us, I could tell that it was probably only a drop of water in their own ocean of knowledge. Yet, they talk with such humility and grace that they made me feel ashamed. The way Shaykh Muhammad Ninowy, who is a direct descendant of Rasulullah s.a.w, talked about compassion and mercy..masyaAllah. It came from his heart. He was smiling, his face was so peaceful. I can't describe it. It was one of those moments where I wish I was a guy so that I could stand close to all the scholars and just stare at their beautiful faces and kiss their hands. May Allah bless them all, ameen...

I will share some of the main things which I learnt today. I can't share all because there was simply too much that I took away from today's conference, alhamdulillah...

1) Allah's Love is unconditional. The very essence of creation is Allah's Love. Without His love, there will not be creation. This then links us back to the first of all of Allah's creation, Nabi Muhammad s.a.w who is the essence of love. If we don't love Rasulullah s.a.w who is Habibullah (The beloved of Allah), then it is highly unlikely that we will attain love for Allah.

2) "...the structure of success is always the same. It does not matter whether it is to establish the deen, fight a battle, or build a business. It is the same deep pattern. You start off in failure and you endeavour to succeed to the point of giving up the struggle, and at the point of giving up the struggle, the opening of Allah comes. That is when His help comes. When you have come to the point where you say; 'Yes Allah, I give up, I have done everything that I can, there is nothing more that I can do, I have tried everything.'..."

3) Ar-Rahman (The compassionate). 1 word. 1 ayat. 1 verse. That is how important this attribute of Allah is. And it is just as important that we embody this attribute in our daily lives, just like how Rasulullah s.a.w did...

4) Having a spiritual routine means to practise something daily and to practise means to repeat. If you have a spiritual routine, insyaAllah it will become your akhlak and it will increase your love for Allah s.w.t.

5) When a guy says 'I love you' to a girl or vice versa, he will be questioned about it on Judgement Day (whether he was honest). Because love is an attribute of Allah that was given to us by Allah. So make sure you mean it when you say you love someone.

and when I came home today, something happened which immediately tested me of the knowledge I had gained today..InsyaAllah..right now, as I ponder over what I've learnt today, I pray that Allah will increase our love for Him and His Messenger. Ameen...

Haha was clearing my shelves and drawers and containers today and I came across letters everywhere! so I decided to read the letters again and was thinking maybe I can throw after reading.. but they are so precious! letters from secondary school up to now. so I decided to just keep the whole bag of it. Haha. I'm too sentimental ah. Clearing my stuff is always the hardest part for me after each semester cos there's just always some value to everything! will need A LOT of storage space in my future house next time :P

my adventure at west coast park! hahaha.. ive never been there before actually. I think I unleashed all my childishness there. :P was running across the playground, climbing this and that, going down the slides etc. haha i took pictures of the things I played with in the playground but not with me on it. haha cos I would have looked like a 5 year old!

the sky was really beautiful, masyaAllah...

my family members plus FSIL :) it was so heartwarming to see yai so cheerful that day.. haha he was making jokes and all also. alhamdulillah :)

the slide was so steep! i went down the slide so fast that I was nearly thrown off it. haha wheeeeeeee adrenaline rush!

i was running around in circles while holding on to the handle and then lifting my feet off the ground. flyinggggggggg :P

Oh this one got me so excited that i jumped onto it but then I was stuck at it for minutes cos I couldnt get down! hahaha.. epic ah.

and then of course, I took pictures of flowers! so pretty :)

Here's a shoutout to my bioengin friends! thanks so much for all your help this semester.. answering my 1001 questions (even the day before exams), replying my late night smses etc.. you guys are really awesome. I think my bioengin cohort is very competitive but everyone's so helpful to each other. and we are pretty close so alhamdulillah :)

After this semester, I've finally found some interest in my course and I actually wouldnt mind pursuing further studies on it, if my results allow it. alhamdulillah.. you never know how a simple prayer can change your life. I used to hate my course and it got so bad that I would pray for Allah to light a spark of interest in bioengineering in my heart. Just a tiny weeny spark would do. And alhamdulillah, Allah has answered my prayer. I feel pretty blessed to have been thrown into this course suddenly. Hopefully, my results will be better this semester insyaAllah :)

I wanna live there. A simple and peaceful life. Running across the fields like there's no tomorrow. Staring at the clouds on top of the mountains like it's the most beautiful thing on earth. Maybe plant lots and lots of flowers and gaze at them every single day. I'll make friends with the birds. I'll sing as I do my daily job. When the sun sets, and it gets really dark, I'll light up some candles and write my own story in my diary.

I dont even know what I can believe in the media nowadays. So many information that simply do not make sense to me. And it's not helping that there's this so-and-so country that is capable of creating lies every now and then and then using the media to blow things out of proportion. What's their purpose?

In uni, I learn of areas that people are trying to develop. Impossible possibilities I call it. Spending so much money doing research just because they found a shred of evidence. I mean, we clearly know the truth and people should just accept it. Areas like creation of life, reversing process of ageing to slow down death. MasyaAllah, all these are in the hands of the Creator. Millions of dollars are spent on really unimportant research and I truly feel that the money could have been put to better use elsewhere. Like come on, people are dying of starvation out there! Oh wells, just my two cents worth. I guess the world can be a depressing place at times but hey, let's be more optimistic.

The pictures taken from my mum's photo album on fb are so pretty! Too bad I couldn't go for the World Orchid Conference :( The flowers look so pretty masyaAllah. I love looking at flowers. I can just stare at them the whole day! :D Plus I missed Kak Hanisah's bday celebration also (Happy Bday Kak Hanisah!). And outing with yai and family at punggol waterway. All cause of my exams :( Shall remember my dad's words, "Seeking knowledge requires sacrifice". I hope I'll do better this semester, insyaAllah. Really really hope I can obtain the minimum I need to stay in USP. or I think I will be sad. Okay not I think. I know. Haha. Can't wait for exams to end! I have so many books I wanna read. Final presentation on Thursday marked the end of our 'Real-Time Dehydration Detection Device' project. I've truly enjoyed every minute of it I must say cos of my wonderful group. Seriously, everyone in the group is so funny and intelligent! Me as an exception la. I never fail to laugh in every project meeting that we have :D Gettting started was tough but after that, things were pretty smooth alhamdulillah. Kudos to everyone! I apologise if I've ever done anything wrong to you guys or owe you guys anything. Didnt mean it yeah.

Thank you so so much for helping me throughout the project :) It's sad that an experience has ended but hopefully we'll have many more memories together, being in the same cohort :) If you guys ever bump into me in sch, pls dont pretend you dont know me and say hi. As I watched the way he wore his baju kurung and took his chair in preparation to answer Allah's call, my heart was filled with admiration. He then said his takbir and slowly sat down on the chair and began his prayers with much concentration and devotion. Later on, as I observed the way he ate, the way he drank, the way he walked, the way his eyes looked around, the way he was silent, for a moment, tears filled my eyes. I watched the way he ate his papaya, coughed out some and threw them in the dustbin, moving on to his next piece. He ate very little today. I gave him a piece of keropok and he joyfully ate it. Like a child eating his lollipop. He loves his keropok udang. He ate slowly and I just sat there, seeing him take his bites. He talks less now and sleeps more. And as I recalled all the long conversations we used to have together, tears rolled down my cheeks. I pray that Allah will bless him with a lot more years to come. InsyaAllah ameen...

The older I get, the less I expect but the more I receive. Syukur Alhamdulillah :)

Yesterday I turned 20. To some, it's 'LIKE FINALLY!!!!!!'. hahaha but to others, age is just a number :) Thinking about my teenage years...one by one the sweet memories come to play. Cedar days were simply awesome and fun! JC days were just crazyyyyy hahaha. Ive never had more fun in my entire life than in my secondary and jc days. No kidding :D When it got to my beacon days, things were more serious, more emotional but nevertheless, extremely meaningful. Uni freshmen year was just a rollercoaster ride, but the time when I grew the most in faith :) Alhamdulillah..

Thank you Allah for my family who's been there through it all, watching me grow and mature(I hope I did :P) and shaping me into who I am today. May Allah bless all of you :)

To my lovely friends, thank you so much for offering me your friendship throughout these years. Apologies if I havent been a good friend. Thank you very much for all your duas and wishes :)

Allah's Love

I attended a sister's halaqah over the weekend at the mosque. Alhamdulillah, it was wonderful to sit there amongst other sisters and learn and be reminded of our duties as Muslims and our roles as members of society.

I first want to say that anything good or right in the paragraphs below is strictly from Allah and anything wrong is from me. These are the notes that I took while listening to the lecture and if I've erred, then I pray that Allah and all of you will forgive me.

We may have heard many of these points throughout our lives as Muslims but we can always benefit from reminders, Insha'Allah. The main topic of this lecture was on Allah's love for His mankind. The lecture was in Urdu and I again apologize if there were any discrepancies in the translation.

The sister in charge of the halaqah started off by reminding us that as women, our roles do not end with being sisters, daughters, wives, and mothers. We are also to be nurturers of our deen {religion}. And we must start nurturing our deen in our homes before we can even think about branching it out. Above all else, we should support each other. We cannot be successful in this life without the support of one another.

We are also to be humanists. And our mission in life is to save humanity. We do that by spreading the word of Allah SWT.

The lecture than continued to naming the attributes of Allah swt, His names and His characteristics. One thing that really struck me was when the sister said that all the names of Allah swt showcased His love for His creation.

For instance:

-Al-Wadud means The Loving One. He loves us 70 times more than our own mothers. 70 TIMES! and MORE THAN OUR OWN MOTHERS. just imagine that. If we are truly repentant, He extends His love to us despite our sins. MasyaAllah. Astarghfirullah.
-Al-Muhaymin means The Guardian. He protects us. Even when we don't ask for it.
-Ar-Rahman means The Compassionate.
-Ar-Rahim means The Merciful. He is full of mercy. Just ask Him.
-Al-Ghaffar means The Forgiving. He forgives over and over and over again. When He forgives, He NEVER brings the sins forward.
-Al-Ghafur means The Forgiver and The Hider of Faults. He covers our sins. From others, from angels, and even the Earth.
-Ar-Razaq means The Sustainer. He is the provider of EVERYTHING. Oxygen to breathe. Food. Drink. He provides for EVERYONE, even those that do not ask Him for anything and those that are not deserving of His rahmah {mercy}.
-Al-Kareem means The Generous. He Gives even when we don't ask Him. He never tires of giving, no matter how much we ask Him. In fact, He gets upset if we don't ask Him. MasyaAllah.
-Al-Mujib means The Responder to Prayer.
-At-Thawwab means The Guide to Repentance. Again, He forgives over and over again.
-As-Sabur means The Patient One. In spite of our ungratefulness and our sins, Allah is patient with us and continues to grant us blessings every single day.

Allah does not need us to worship Him. In fact, he has thousands and thousands of angels whose sole purpose is to praise Him day and night. Yet, Allah would like us to praise Him, to obey Him and to submit to Him. He still loves us even though He doesn't need us. When a person comes to Allah, despite having spent her entire day committing sin after sin, and says, or even just thinks "Ya Rabb" {Oh, Lord}, Allah accepts her RIGHT THEN. No questions asked.

The ustazah than gave us an example. She said to think of a baby that's just learning to walk. As he toddles towards his beloved mother, she stands with her hands spread in front of her, ready to catch her baby should he stumble and fall. Just like she has feared, he begins to wobble. Before he hits the ground and possibly hurts himself, she reaches out and catches him. That's how Allah stands ready to catch His creation should we fall. And He waits for us to return to Him, no matter how far we've fallen. And should we ask for His forgiveness with a true heart, He gladly hands it over.

Remember, when making du'a, appeal to Allah by using His beautiful names. Call out to Him. Keep His name on your lips. Walk to Him. He will run to you.

Today I had a wonderful surprise from my family :D I'm supposed to be matured since I'm turning 20 in two days time but of course, the surprise made me scream and shout so much that it ruined my resolution to act mature. Haha! Tadaaaa!!!! A box of purple and white cupcakes with my name on it!

Love it so so much I think I took a million photos with it la :P Purple is my favourite colour and the cupcakes are just so pretty, masyaAllah. Syukur Alhamdulillah. My mum was saying she wanted to make me happy cos I was so sad about turning 20. Haha.. Love love love my family :) May Allah bless them always.. Ameen!

Here's a bit of what I learnt from Ustazah Mariam's class on the month of Zulhijjah :) All were supported by sahih hadiths but I didnt manage to copy down the sources...

1. For the first nine days of Dzulhijjah, the fast of EACH of these days is equal to the fast of a whole year and the worship of EACH of these nights is equal to the worship of Lailatul Qadr.
2. There is no day wherein any good actions is beloved to Allah s.w.t than the first ten days of Zulhijjah so my ustazah says we should do more zikir during these days.
3. On the day of Arafah, there is abundance of descending mercy from Allah s.w.t and Allah forgives the sins of His servants.
4. The fast of Youmul Arafah (9th Zulhijjah) is the atonement of sins for the previous year and the coming year.
5. Whoever performs ibadah on the nights of the two Eid (Aidiladha and Aidilfitri), his heart will not be dead on the day of Qiyaamah when all hearts will be dead.

Top 10 Amazing Facts About Dreams:

1. Blind People Dream

People who become blind after birth can see images in their dreams. People who are born blind do not see any images, but have dreams equally vivid involving their other senses of sound, smell, touch and emotion. It is hard for a seeing person to imagine, but the body’s need for sleep is so strong that it is able to handle virtually all physical situations to make it happen.

7. Dreams are not about what they are about

If you dream about some particular subject it is not often that the dream is about that. Dreams speak in a deeply symbolic language. The unconscious mind tries to compare your dream to something else, which is similar. Its like writing a poem and saying that a group of ants were like machines that never stop. But you would never compare something to itself, for example: “That beautiful sunset was like a beautiful sunset”. So whatever symbol your dream picks on it is most unlikely to be a symbol for itself.

This is called Dream Incorporation and it is the experience that most of us have had where a sound from reality is heard in our dream and incorporated in some way. My own experience of this includes repeatedly drinking a large glass of water in the dream which satisfies me, only to find the thirst returning shortly after – this thirst… drink… thirst… loop often recurs until I wake up and have a real drink.

9. You are paralyzed while you sleep

Believe it or not, your body is virtually paralyzed during your sleep – most likely to prevent your body from acting out aspects of your dreams. According to the Wikipedia article on dreaming, “Glands begin to secrete a hormone that helps induce sleep and neurons send signals to the spinal cord which cause the body to relax and later become essentially paralyzed.”
